Spreading the Blessings

Spreading the Blessings

Just as God’s blessings to Abraham were not meant for him alone, we are invited to share our blessings with others.

 Genesis 12: 2
I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

I grew up going to summer camp each year, and one of my favorite songs to sing around the campfire was “Pass It On.” Here are the lyrics of the first verse:
It only takes a spark to get a fire going,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing.
That’s how it is with God’s love.
Once you’ve experienced it,
You spread God's love to everyone.

You want to pass it on.

Oftentimes when we think of the blessings of God, we think first about being recipients. We give thanks for the blessings WE RECEIVE. And while this is a great start, just as God’s blessings to Abraham were not meant for him alone, we are invited to share our blessings with others. And just like the spark that gets the fire going, the love of God is spread to everyone around us who “warm up in its glowing.”

We have been asked this week to reflect on all the ways we receive God’s blessings, and to find some way to release those blessings back out into the world. Has God blessed you with the ability to write? Perhaps you could volunteer to write a FirstFive devotional to bless others. Are you blessed with the gift of music? Perhaps you could offer your gifts to help lead worship and glorify God through song. These are just two examples… I’d love to hear how you plan to share your blessings with others to pass on the love of God.

Prayer

God of Abundant Blessings, we thank you for the multitude of ways you have blessed us. Help us to use our gifts to spread your love with others. Amen.
