Releasing God’s Blessings: One Stone at a Time
Count Your Blessings
Genesis 12:1-2
The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your land, your family, and your father’s household for the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation and will bless you. I will make your name respected, and you will be a blessing.”
God was about to send Abram (who was later renamed Abraham) on an epic adventure, one that involved leaving his home and heading to an undisclosed location. Although this hardly sounds like the prelude to a blessing to me, Abraham rose to the occasion:
Abram left just as the Lord told him, and Lot went with him. Now Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all of their possessions, and those who became members of their household in Haran; and they set out for the land of Canaan. (Genesis 12:4-5)
As Abraham’s journey of faith continued, God, of course, blessed him as promised. Abraham and his wife Sarah were able to have a child, Isaac, long after they had given up hope. Abraham’s descendants were “as numerous as the stars.” Over the years, Abraham accumulated wealth, respect, and fame. And more importantly, Abraham had the blessing of an intimate, faith-filled relationship with God.
One thing God made clear about Abraham’s blessing was that it wasn’t for him alone. Abraham was blessed to be a blessing. The ultimate fulfillment of this blessing: Jesus, who was part of Abraham’s family tree.
Abraham’s story reminds us:
We are abundantly blessed, both materially and spiritually.
And…
We are a blessing.
Do you think of yourself as blessed? As a blessing? Talk with God about it.
Prayer
Gracious God,
Thank you for the abundant blessings you have poured out on me. [Name them here.] Show me ways today to be a blessing to those around me, I pray. Amen.
